20-20-20

Don’t you love the fall? Crisp air, blue skies and yellow leaves mark a new beginning for so many things. One of them is the official launch of a challenge that I now place before you all: How quickly can 20,000 fans of massage donate $20 to celebrate the Massage Therapy Foundation’s 20th anniversary?

The Massage Therapy Foundation was established in 1990 by the American Massage Therapy Association. We are an association-foundation, connected by loyalty to each other, and by a shared vision for our profession. But we are, and always have been an independent organization, dedicated to advancing the profession of massage therapy through scientific research, education, and community service.

In recognition of our 20th anniversary, an amazing group of volunteers has created a special campaign —RISE, for Research, Inspiration, Service, Education: the hallmarks of the Massage Therapy Foundation’s missions.

  • Research: the MTF began funding research in 1993, which has led to discoveries about massage and cancer; massage and acute stress for both children and adults; massage and headaches; and many others. Massage research helps to define our credibility and to hone our effectiveness. Our research granting depends entirely on gifts from our donors—how much we fund is entirely up to you!
  • Inspiration: You are our inspiration.  Since 1992 you have donated over $1,850,000 to our cause.  Thank you for your investment in our future.
  • Service: the Community Service Grants we have funded have delivered massage to at-risk Latinas in Boston; to Native Americans in the Southwest; to the homeless in Portland, Oregon and elsewhere; to torture survivors; to those living with HIV/AIDS; to pediatric burn patients, and to many others.
  • Education: Our Case Report Contests, research meetings, Teaching Research Literacy program, and our free peer-reviewed academic journal, International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork bring information and skills to our profession.

Many of you may already have seen our RISE Campaign at various events, on Facebook, or on our website, so this might look familiar:

This week some Foundation friends visited me at the beach, and we decided to recreate the RISE picture ourselves; here is the result:

Ruth, Diana and Leslie RISE to the Occasion!

So here is my challenge to you: join the RISE Campaign by clicking here: http://www.massagetherapyfoundation.org/ to make your gift. Then invite friends, clients, business associates, anyone who could be described as a “fan of massage” to join you. A gift of $20 is just a suggestion; no need to feel constrained by that! Tweet about your gift, if that is your desire, and use the Twitter hashtag #mtfRISE. Then, send us your RISE picture, and we can celebrate our 20th Anniversary together: we’ll post all the RISE pix we get on the MTF Facebook page.

How quickly can 20,000 fans of massage donate $20 to celebrate the Massage Therapy Foundation’s 20th anniversary? If we all work together—pretty darn quick.
